  1. Do I have the option of choosing my practice area?
    The firm takes into account an applicant’s background, experience and their perceived fit within the firm culture. The firm will consider an applicant’s expressed interest in a particular area of law; however, we cannot make any guarantees that an applicant will be placed in the practice area of their choice.
  2. What is the billable hour requirement for associates?
    Billable hour expectations are just one part of Porter Scott’s overall expectation of comprehensive associate development. Porter Scott seeks to provide clear communication to associates of what is expected of them. Porter Scott expects associates to develop efficiency in their practice, including recording a minimum of 1,840 hours per year.  Associates are further expected to devote time to firm investment activities which include continuing education, training, development, business development/marketing and pro bono activities.
  3. How will my performance as an associate be evaluated?
    Associates are evaluated annually on February 1 and are considered for a merit-based salary increase at that time. All partners with whom the associate works participate in the evaluation process. In addition, annually on October 1 all associates who have been with the firm three years or more are eligible for a discretionary merit-based bonus. All bonuses and merit salary increases are determined by a variety of factors, including work ethic, work product, overall legal ability and effectiveness of marketing efforts.
  4. What does the Shareholder track consist of at Porter Scott?
    Porter Scott does not have a formal Shareholder track. Each associate is evaluated individually. All candidates for Shareholder status are evaluated on quality of legal work, ethics, acumen, work efficiency, overall cohesiveness in the firm culture and business development. In years where an associate is up for Shareholder review, current Shareholders vote in November and the Shareholder status becomes effective in January of the next year.
  5. Can I actually have a life outside my legal work?
    Porter Scott promotes a work-life balance. The firm strives to provide challenging and intriguing projects while at the same time encouraging its employees to enjoy time with their families and participate in community events. Each year Porter Scott hosts several social events including the annual Associates’ Dinner, Administrative Professionals Day luncheon, Staff Christmas Party, Halloween Potluck as well as a bake off and staff luncheons. The firm also sponsors sports teams for attorneys.
