Nancy Sheehan Leads Sacramento Valley ABOTA Chapter

Porter Scott is pleased to announce that Nancy Sheehan, a partner with the firm, is the 2009 President of the Sacramento Valley Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates. Nancy is only the second woman to serve as President of the Sacramento Valley Chapter since its inception in 1972. She has been a member of ABOTA since 1999, and has held various other officer positions during the past five years.
In her short time as President, Nancy has already taken steps to improve communication with Chapter members via monthly e-mail updates and to increase member participation in ABOTA educational programs such as the "Justice By the People" program for middle schools students and the "Civility Matters" program for law students. In addition to annual events such as its spring reception to honor members of the judiciary, the Chapter is looking into holding a fund-raising event for local charities that serve the poor. One of Nancy's goals is to increase diversity in the Chapter by working with local bar organizations to identify possible candidates for membership.
ABOTA is an organization dedicated to preserving the right to trial by jury in civil cases, and to elevating the standards of integrity, honor and civility in the legal profession. The Chapter has over 150 members hailing from Sacramento, Yolo, San Joaquin, Placer, Butte and Mendocino counties. Membership is by invitation only. In order to qualify, an attorney must have tried at least twenty jury trials to verdict or meet a stringent point equivalent based on days in trial; have excellent trial skills; and must demonstrate the highest levels of integrity, honesty and civility in his or her interactions with other attorneys and the courts. Nancy has tried nearly thirty employment cases to juries in state and federal court. She is considered by many employers in the private and public sectors to be the "go to" litigator for the defense of wrongful termination, harassment, discrimination and retaliation cases. Among the attorneys who litigate cases with Nancy many comment on her civility and professionalism.
There are 6,500 ABOTA members throughout the United States. Porter Scott is proud to have more ABOTA members than any other litigation firm in the Sacramento area and very proud of Nancy and her efforts.
